Career Fair Prep Tips
Attending a career fair or other career-related events is an opportunity for you to make a lasting impression on potential employers! To help you prepare and properly showcase yourself and your skills, we’ve provided some tips below.
1. Update your resume:
Your resume is more than just a list of your experiences—it’s your personal marketing tool. It highlights your qualifications, skills, and accomplishments to show how you’re the right fit for a specific job, internship, or graduate/professional school opportunity. A well-crafted resume grabs the attention of employers or admissions committees and helps you land interviews.
Use Quinncia to assist you in building a strong resume:
Quinncia (referred to as Quinn) is an interactive artificial intelligence-based platform, which helps students to build a strong resume by providing custom resume critiques, helping navigate Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), and assisting with mastering the interview process by simulating the live interview experience.

2. Dress for success
Set yourself apart from the crowd by wearing professional attire to career fairs. Depending on your industry, this may involve wearing a suit or simply dressing in business casual attire. If you do not have the right outfit or need advise, we are here to help.
Suit-A-Bull
Suit-A-Bull is a free professional clothing resource for USF students. Students can find attire for career fairs, interviews, and workplace meetings/events when professional clothing is required. Browse and try on clothing and take up to 4 items to take home to keep (limit 1 suit).
Suit-A-Bull is located in the Student Services Building in room SVC 2060.
3. Prepare to speak with employers
Research employers attending:
- Review the list of attending employers and their open job positions (you can find this information on the career fair’s event page on Handshake).
- Identify companies of interest related to your career industry or field of study.
- Research USF alumni with the respective companies on LinkedIn for networking opportunities.
- Review available positions based on your interest and field of study.
- Research companies’ mission statements, industries, and economic trends.
Prepare your elevator pitch:
- Develop a summary of your academic and work background, goals, and interest in the position or company.
- Greet employers, introduce yourself, and share your class year, major, and interest in the employer, job, and/or internship.
- State what you would like to learn more about from the employer.
Prepare meaningful questions to ask the employer, like:
- What are common career paths within your organization?
- What qualities do successful candidates possess?
- Could you tell me more about the culture of your organization?
- What specific skills and qualifications are you looking for in candidates?
- What would be a great next step to take after meeting you today and who could I follow up with regarding the position(s)?
Properly represent your brand:
- Ensuring your social media accounts communicate your values and interests.
- Print extra copies of your resume neatly organized in a professional padfolio.
- It is not required, but we encourage you to wear industry-appropriate professional attire to dress for success.
