Students can use the following techniques to help with finding organizations, employers, and contractors that hold congruent views and values around belonging.
Utilize documents and websites to review organizations values, mission, vision statements, and organizational charts. Review the organizations social media channels, websites, LinkedIn connections, and GlassDoor.com’s reviews.
Think about the following: Who do you see represented? Can you find information that backs up their stated values? Are there networking or mentoring opportunities?
Do the answers to these questions align with your values?
Ask Questions During the Interview Process or Beyond
- How does your organization define belonging?
- Does your organization engage internal and external stakeholders with different perspectives?
- What social/philanthropic causes does your organization support?
- Does your organization actively support small businesses?
- Has your organization made any formal commitments in support positive company culture?
- Does your organization offer any formal employee training around biases and acceptance of various perspectives?
- Does your organization have any interest groups or professional development opportunities that contribute to the growth of your employees?
- Does your organization complete annual compensation equity analysis?
- What accommodations are built into the work environment as a universal design?
- How did your organization adapt to Covid-19 to ensure the success of all employees?
