The Student Legal Advocate is responsible for enforcing and clarifying all laws and regulations applicable to all SG entities, representing the interests of members of the Student Body in all matters that come before the Student Government Supreme Court, and serving as legal counsel in SG cases as needed. They are required to attend all cabinet meetings, day/time to be decided by all members of the cabinet. They also should attend Campus Council meetings of the SG Campus Council in St. Petersburg, when schedule permits.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in researching and clarifying statutes and other policies to students in conjunction with the federal Solicitor General.
- Work with the Office of Legal Affairs in reviewing Student Government governing documents
- Review documents upon requests of students who wish to file an appeal to the SG Supreme Court
- Serve as legal counsel at the request of the students in all matters that may come before the Court
- Attend Court Judicial Branch meetings and meetings pertaining to parking appeals
- Coordinate and facilitate monthly Legal Aid sessions on behalf of the Executive Branch in conjunction with the Solicitor General
- Promote awareness of parking policies with the Court through promo events
- Consult with the federal AG regarding SG proceedings to ensure compliance with legal documents.
- Refer students and SG officials seeking legal opinions to the office of the Attorney General (AG)
- Research and develop programs for the Governor that improve the campus and students’ experiences
- Mediate complaints/concerns between two or more students not affiliated with SG, referring SG
- officials to the Attorney General
- Perform other duties as necessary to execute the mission of the Executive Branch/Cabinet
- Provide legal advice and support to students who are facing legal issues or concerns.
- Assist students in navigating the legal system and understanding their legal rights and responsibilities.
- Work with other student government officials to develop policies and procedures related to legal issues affecting students.
- Represent students in legal proceedings, if necessary.
- Conduct research and stay up-to-date on relevant laws and regulations that may affect students.
- Collaborate with local legal aid organizations and attorneys to provide resources to students.
- Attend Executive Cabinet Meetings and provide necessary updates to fellow members.
- Assist with additional SG Initiatives & Programs
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
· Must be in good academic standing (maintain minimum cumulative institutional 2.5 GPA for
undergraduate students and 3.0 GPA for graduate students)
· Must be actively enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours as an undergraduate degree seeking student or a minimum of 4 credit hours as a post-baccalaureate during the fall and spring semesters
· Must not be under current disciplinary probation, suspension or expulsion
· Should be familiar with the SG Constitution and Statutes or be committed to learning them quickly
· Must be able to maintain a high level of professionalism and a commitment to ethical practices
· Must be able to think critically and logically in any given situation.
· Preferred experience with conflict management and cultural settings.
· Preferred experience working within a team dynamic.
· Preferred experience with organizational management and an office environment.
· Ability to take initiative in the workplace and create strategic goals.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work in an office setting. May need to travel within the Tampa Bay area and on campuses for SG conferences and meetings. All travel accommodations made available by SG if needed/preferred.
