“PROVIDING USF STRATEGIC INTELLIGENCE AND SECURITY STUDENTS WITH A D.C. EXPERIENCE.”
Since 2010, Washington DC-based global consulting firm, Security Management International, has provided internship opportunities for over 200 undergraduate and graduate students from various universities. In 2020, SMI established a partnership with the University of South Florida – known as the Security Training Collaborative – to provide a foundation for students in the fields of national security, criminology, intelligence, and international relations.
- Eight Languages spoken among students
- 60+ students through the program since 2020
- Preference for military veterans but not required
- Three credit hours provided
- Major projects include: country threat reports for US Intelligence Community, background investigations for major law firms, development of security training programs for world’s largest corporation
- Ongoing training with local/state/federal agencies
Overview
As part of SMI’s ongoing commitment to provide a foundation for students in the fields of national security, criminology, intelligence, and international relations, we have the following internships currently available:
JUNIOR RESEARCH ASSOCIATE PROGRAM (Multiple positions available)
Responsibilities include:
- Perform due diligence for international country reports and intelligence white papers
- Assist with the design of crisis management tabletop exercises
- Assist with the development of security training courses for government & private clientele
- Other assigned duties
Requirements include:
- Professional demeanor
- Ability to perform open-source intelligence (OSINT)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Understanding of social media marketing preferred
- Previous international travel and foreign language skills preferred
- 4-8 hour per week time commitment (virtual w/ scheduled monthly lab/office hours)
- Preference for at least one full workday per week in the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus office
Compensation includes:
- Possible credit hour(s) for internship
- Small stipend to cover out-of-pocket/travel expenses
- Possible publication credit in security trade journal
- Possible letter of recommendation following internship
- Possible domestic travel for client security projects
- Possible financial bonus
- Access to SMI training courses and certification
Program Length
Internships are usually one semester long (8-16 weeks). However, they can be extended depending upon student (or project) circumstances.
